Last winter with the Institute of Urban studies where I was working, we saw a lot of rural Manitoba - flat and covered with snow. Smitty's, bingo halls, the side of the road and DHL trucks. All of us wanted to see those places again in the summer. I didn't get out to the festivals like I'd hoped and didn't return to Poplar Field for perogies, but Murray and I took off for Steep Rock one day. It wasn't what I was expecting, my grandma grew up there and I was expecting some kind of town - something more than a beach community i guess. Either way, there were some steep rocks.
I miss Winnipeg a lot, but I miss these places too...these places outside the Manitoba I experienced that I still feel a connection to, and that I hope to get to know better.
