Thursday. we went way uptown to Harlem. Harlem World. we loosely followed this walking tour my cousin Jenny gave us but usually with those we scrap em quick and turn whatever way seems right. Harlem was the place most like a neighbourhood i've been to in new york. people would pass each other on the street and ask how family members were doing.
we also got hollered at more than any other place. hearing "hey red" and "hey there light skin" was pretty funny. also the accents seem to make it more of an experience and less creepy.
the buildings in Harlem were also the most impressive of any neighbourhood we've been to. the churches and apartment blocks are intricate and beautiful - always blending in between two newer building and barely noticable across narrow streets.
Harlem kind of reminded me of West Side Story. where did that musical take place? where on the west side?
side note: alysha just told me trying to see slick rick is the most stressful event of her life right now.
after Harlem we took the train to midtown where we eventually were going to a photography book launch. we got out of the subway and were pretty much in the midde of Times Square - so we got to take that off the list. Our friend from brooklyn told me they closed it off to traffic about a month ago so when we got there we saw cops directing traffic a set of bleachers and a few rows of lawn chairs. it was pretty neat. I'm glad i saw it but i can't imagine why i would want to go there again.
The opening we went to was of Dan Winter's book of periodical photographs. we only went to see Hanna and Samual from montreal but ended up missing them anyway. We were really h0ping to see them again before they went back to berlin. The talk he gave was great and i was glad we stumbled upon it anyway.
Afterwards we went for Calzone at this italian place where the guy at the counter looked like a cross between Tim Hoover and John Turturo.
I went to brooklyn to hang out with friends we met there and alysha made the most amazing fruit salad that we ate in central park the next day.
Friday we went to Central Park. it was nice to be in nature for a bit - alysha was pretty sure she would like to take up jogging just to do it in central park. we had a nice picnic.
Frankie across the hall told us he met the promoter for this lounge and we should all go by. alysha and i were skeptical about how much we could spend and also the music they would play. we were pleasently surprised when they not only played rap all night but Josh, dude that invited us comes by and says "i'm bringing a bottle of vodka by in ten minutes."
that set the tone for the night.
There was always a bottle on our table.
the bottles came with sparklers.
It was a totally celebrity and swank new york moment. that lasted all night.
Josh's friends hung out with us too - they were from Harlem and Bronx so i got to talk to a few of them about the area of New York i know the most about - the Boogie Down Bronx.
Last night may have been my favourite night here so far because of the swank.
Today was recovery. we are having a movie night with our roomates. maybe pizza.
